In 2 Corinthians 10:12, Paul says, โWe do not compare ourselves to those who think they are something.โ They measure themselves by their yardsticks and compare themselves to themselves. โThis is not wise.โ We should not compare ourselves to others because it is not wise. We will either end up feeling proud and arrogant if we compare ourselves to those who are worse than us, or we will end up feeling discouraged if we compare ourselves to those who are better than us.
The Bible also tells us that comparisons are not helpful because they usually involve envy. In James 4:5, we are told, โDo you think that the Scripture says without reason that the spirit that God has made to live in us envies intensely?โ Envy is not a helpful or positive emotion. It is a negative emotion that only leads to harm.
So, what should we do if we find ourselves comparing ourselves to others? The Bible tells us to focus on our own lives and not compare ourselves to others. In Philippians 4:8, we are told, โFinally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirableโif anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things.โ We should focus on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. We should think about these things and not compare ourselves to others.
Why we shouldnโt compare ourselves to others

In a world that is constantly bombarding us with images of what we โshouldโ have, itโs no wonder we struggle with comparison. But the truth is, no matter how hard we try, we will never be able to keep up with the Joneses. There will always be someone who has more than us, who is thinner than us, who is smarter than us, or who is better than us.
So what does the Bible say about comparison?
โDo not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, by the faith God has distributed to each of you.โ -Romans 12:3
โFor we do not dare classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves.โ โWhen they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.โ 2 Corinthians 10:12
โWhy, even among yourselves, do you not judge what is right?โ Luke 12:57
These verses make it clear that we are not to compare ourselves to others. We are to think of ourselves with sober judgment. We are to judge what is right, not based on what others think or do, but on our standards and values.
